HTC One M8 Prime Release Not Happening

Reports now indicate the HTC One M8 Prime/Plus has been canned

If you were anticipating the rumoured HTC One M8 Prime/Plus you may be a little dissapointed at the news that it could have already been axed, or at least indefinitely postponed.
The word comes via oft reliable Twitter source @evleaks, which reports that "development on Prime has been suspended indefinitely". There's no information about why this could have happened.
Although the Prime was never officially confirmed, there's little reason to doubt @evleaks' information, and the fact that it claims the project is on hold suggests that the rumours were indeed true - the Prime/Plus was in development.
Reports had previously suggested the HTC One M8 Prime would launch in early 2015 – before the close of Q1, to be exact. The idea behind the handset was simple: it seemed to be an update to the HTC One M8, and would likely feature Qualcomm's upcoming 64-bit Snapdragon 808 or 810 chipset.
The majority of the leaks up to now have come via @evleaks and HTC has said nothing on record about its plans to update its current flagship model, the HTC One M8. As of June 11 2014 the plan seems to be to ditch the M8 Prime and focus on the development of the HTC One M9 Prime, 2015's flagship handset. But it gets even weirder as the same source goes on to say that will be followed by another handset just called the M9 - we'll level with you that we don't have the foggiest idea what to make of that. Anyone got any theories as to what's going on? Comment below if so.
Leaker @evleaks stated the M8 Prime will “likely remain deadpooled.” As we said – the reason behind this decision is unclear. Cost could be one reason. Or, HTC might be pooling its resources and focusing on making next-year's flagship even better. Perhaps – although this is a long shot – it has something to do with the rumoured HTC Windows Phone expected to debut later this year?
